#TBT NYE Edition

Hi guys!  Crazy day yesterday.  Had to do waaay more than my share of belly breathing!  But today is a new day and tomorrow is a new year!!

We're not huge NYE party people in this household.  NYC can be a little too much around this time so we usually prefer to spend it at home.  But we did make it out a few years ago when this pic was taken:

Looks like it was pretty mild since I didn't have my winter coat on so here's to a repeat of that weather this year!

Oh, in case you missed it, check out this post for luxurious NYE outfit ideas, all in velvet!

See you in the new year, lovelies!

IGNITE Inspiration: Faux Fur Poncho

Hi guys!  Still pretty mild here in New York, which is great because that means more time to wear transitional pieces like this faux fur poncho.

I hadn't planned on getting this when I went to the thrift store.  I was looking for something entirely different but isn't this always the case when we go shopping?  You spot the item.  Then you pick it up (mistake #1).  Then you hold it up to see how it *would* look, *if* you were to buy it (mistake #2).  Then you figure, "what the hell.  I'll just try it on to see if it actually looks good (mistake #3).  You hold it for a while and finally end up buying it.  Don't tell me you haven't been there.

But this little poncho is no mistake.  She was actually a sample from some no name designer/manufacturer- lucky me!  I've worn her a few times since I bought her a month ago and we get along just fine :)  Btw, they had a GORGEOUS blue fur capelet behind the counter but it was a no go....real rabbit fur....no thanks.

So as not to compete with the cape, I kept everything else simple: dark denim skinnies, black platform booties and black sunnies.

This is the closest match I could find for this poncho but it is 5x the price!  Ponchos and faux fur are both pretty popular items this season so it's definitely worth checking out your local thrift store to see if you can score one for cheap.  Similar skinnies here and booties here.

Find any gems lately?  Share!

Birthday Celebration!

Hey guys!  Did you make it through the holidays ok?  This time of year is always so busy with Christmas and New Years and all.  But even more so because of my birthday!  Yup.   Two days before Christmas.   Shout out to my sis-in-law who found the perfect meme for us December babies:

LOL!  This is so perfect.  If you have a December birthday, you understand.

Luckily, I don't really get the shaft too often when it comes to gifts.  This year, the hubs took me out to dinner and to see the Rockettes!  Cross this one off the bucket list!  It was awesome.

And this is what I wore:

I got the top at my favorite second-hand store.  It's in pristine condition and I just fell in love with the details.  Take a close up look at this beading:

That's the best part about thrift stores.  You can find total gems and never have to worry about someone else wearing the same thing!  Love this piece.  As you can see, I paired it with simple black skinny pants and my fav cutout heels.

Unfortunately, as usual, I was in such a hurry to get ready that we didn't have time to snap any pics but hopefully I'll get to wear this again soon so I can capture it in all it's glory for ya!

One more week til 2016....make the most of it lovelies!

IGNITE Inspiration: From You to Me, Pinky Lee!

When coming up with a title for this look, for some reason all I could think of was this scene in Grease:

"From you to me, Pinky Lee!"
I venture to guess that today's IGNITE Inspiration would have been totally acceptable attire for a member of the Pink Ladies.  God, I love this movie.

Anywho, here we go:

If there's anything I love, it's combining multiple hues in the same color palette in one outfit.  Here, I couldn't resist pairing the sweater/tank combo with my fav neon pink beanie.  My white flares finally got to make their winter debut too.  So bright and cheery on an overcast day.

Sweater: similar Old Navy // Tank: similar Old Navy // Jeans: old F21 (skinny version) // Boots: old, GoJane (cute option) // Beanie: F21 //
Bracelets: H&M

Ugly Sweater Rehab

'Tis the season for the inevitable ugly sweater party and/or contest.  It's amazing how this concept has grown in popularity compared to just a year or two ago.  Luckily, I haven't been subject to such an event.  My husband, however, was not so lucky this year.  A spiffy dresser regularly, this was not his cup of tea.  While his sweater was miles away from anything he would ever consider wearing, it was not hideous enough to win his office contest.

In reality, it wasn't really that bad.  It was actually the most attractive ugly sweater I've seen thus far.  Now you know me and my challenges.... Even though I didn't have an ugly sweater party to attend, I decided that should I ever be in such a situation, I should probably have a game plan.  So, I asked the hubs for the sweater, which he gladly relinquished and came up with this little ditty.

See?  It's not so bad.  It is ugly.  But cute-ugly, amiright?

It was just big enough to pull off as a dress.  I paired it with what I call my "legs for dayz" booties and of course a basic black beanie.  But it would look just as cute with some sheer black tights and full length boots if you want more coverage.

Sweater: H&M (men's) // Booties: old but these are cute from GoJane // Beanie: F21

So whaddya think?   Hopefully I've inspired you to make the most of a most UN-stylish occasion (should you have to endure it).  How have you guys overcome this style dilemma?

6 Affordable NYE Looks: Velvet

Where has December gone??  I always panic when people start using the term "last minute shopping".  It usually happens one week before Christmas, which, in my opinion, is so NOT last minute.  Needless to say, I have yet to get a single gift.  I've got my game plan though so the toughest part is over.  Except for the lines, I guess.

Anyway, if you've got your shopping done already- good for you!  Now you can focus on the ever important New Year's Eve outfit!  Here, I've compiled 6 affordable, stylish ways to sport velvet when that ball drops.

If you've been following along, you may remember this post where I declared my distaste for velvet clothing.  But I have to say, these pieces I found are so adorable!  Read on....

How sexy is this velvet jumper?  All eyes will be on you in this!

Jumper: H&M // Faux fur coat: here // Tights: H&M // Earcuffs: F21 // Shoes: GoJane

I love the velvet detailing on this bodycon dress.  And that color!!

Dress: Romwe // Shoes: GoJane // Ring: F21 // Clutch: GoJane // Earcuffs: F21

To say this velvet bodysuit has a plunging neckline is an understatement.  But really, if any holiday calls for sexy style, it's NYE, right?

Bodysuit: Topshop // Suede pants: H&M // Necklace: F21 // Shoes: GoJane // Earcuffs: F21 // Clutch: GoJane

The velvet floral pattern in this flirty romper adds luxury to this playful look.

Romper: GoJane // Coat: Romwe // Boots: GoJane // Wallet: H&M // Necklace: F21

While the jumper is adorable, the velvet necklace is that star of this look.

Necklace: Romwe // Jumper: H&M // Clutch: ASOS // Earrings: F21 // Shoes: GoJane

This dress is so 80's and that's exactly why I chose it.  That and because it complements the velvet necklace perfectly!

Necklace: GoJane // Dress: H&M // Earrings: H&M // Shoes: GoJane

There you have it.  6 ways to wear velvet like a boss.  I eat my words about this luxe fabric.  I admit it.  It is indeed possible to find chic, stylish velvet pieces out there if you look hard enough.

Stay tuned next week for another NYE style compilation!

IGNITE Inspiration: ALL DAY

Is this really December?  I'm loving this spring weather but partly fearing what may be around the corner.  Weather has an evil sense of humor sometimes, no?

Whatever the case, I'm taking advantage of these balmy temps.  This week's look is one of my favorites because it is SO comfy!  I borrowed the tee from the hubs and paired it with some plaid legging/pants and my new favorite booties.

Tee: here / Pants: old uniqlo, similar here or here / Booties: here (limited sizes), these are cute too /
Sunnies: here

I'd been eyeing these booties from GoJane for a little while before I finally bought them.  So glad I did.  They go with everything and are super comfy, which is important for city dwellers like myself.

at the same time?  Great for the beer enthusiast.

Not quite under $100 but if you've already any of these pieces in your wardrobe, knock that off the total cost for this outfit.

Weekend Web Look: Blushing

Wow, this week flew by.  It's still pretty warm out so I figured I'd post another shorts/tights look.  I never get tired of that combo!

I love this look because pretty much all of the pieces can be used in other outfits.  The swap the shorts and tights for white skinnies.  Swap the pink sweater for a bolder color for a completely different vibe.  Change the booties for some suede OTK boots for more warmth.

We came in well under $100 with this outfit and with such versatile pieces, you really can't go wrong.
You might be able to score an even lower price due to all the seasonal sales going on now so give it a shot!

Details and links to all of these items can be found here.  Happy Friday, guys!

IGNITE Inspiration: Lady in Red- Winter Wedding Attire

Last weekend, we had the pleasure of not only getting together with lots of family (old and new) for Thanksgiving but also attending my cousin's beautiful wedding!

Of course, I waited until the last minute to think about what to wear only to find that the dress I was thinking of wearing was in the end too summery for an end-of-November wedding!  Most people would just give in and buy a dress at their favorite store, no muss, no fuss, right?

But not me...oh nooo.  I decided this would be a great opportunity to challenge myself- yet again.  Yes, I would see if I could find something suitable for a wedding at a second-hand store.

So less than 24 hours before we were to leave for our trip, there I was sifting through the racks.  I must have tried on about 20 dresses and was cursing myself once again for not only waiting until the last minute but also giving myself ANOTHER obstacle to tackle when I happened upon not one but TWO dresses that just clicked.

I bought both.  You know, so I could have options. ;-P  And my total for both dresses came to $32!

As you can see, I ended up wearing the red dress and was super happy with my choice.  It was comfy, flattering and best of all, a great price at $20.

Bonus: this dress was from Zara with the original sales tag still attached.  Original price? $79.99.  Score!  I paired it with my favorite black heels and some gold dangly earrings from F21.  Total spent on this outfit was $24.90.

As for the black dress?  I have an empty spot in my winter wardrobe that's just right for a cooler-weather LBD.  Check out a close up of the fabric:

The moral of the story:  With a little patience and persistence it IS possible to find semi-formal wear at your local thrift store.  I would recommend starting your search a little earlier than I did but as you can see, there are little gems hiding in those racks.  Just gotta look!

What about you guys?  I want to hear about your thrift store success stories!

Somewhere Over The Rainbow

Second rainy day in a row this week.  Not complaining though.  It's DECEMBER and it's still warm enough to wear a fall jacket!  Considering we had already had a big snow storm this time last year, I think we're doing pretty good.

So, without further ado, here's another super cute rainy day 'fit.

Don't you love that umbrella?  More information plus links to all of these items can be found here.

4 Must-Have Items for Your BEST NYC Vacation

Planning a trip to the Big Apple?  Well, get ready for a truly unforgettable experience.

It's common knowledge that NYC is a fast-paced, bustling, crowded metropolis.  It's been the setting for countless TV series and movies but is rarely portrayed exactly how it is, leaving the viewer with a somewhat unrealistic or glossy image of what everyday NYC life is like.

So here we go: a crash course in essential items to make your NYC trip smoother.

1.  LARGE CROSS-BODY BAG

With so much to see and do, you'll most likely be out and about for most of your stay.  Clutches, as cute as they may be, will not cut it.  You'll need a bag large enough to carry your personal items (phone, water, sunglasses etc.) but also any purchases you make throughout the day, guide books (if using), and your sweater/jacket.  I recommend cross-body bags since they free up your hands and are easy to access, which is especially helpful while shopping.  Most of them also give you the option of wearing them as a shoulder bag, which is great.  They're also a safer option than backpacks in regards to pick-pocketing and other types of theft.  NYC can be pretty dirty so steer clear of light colored or suede bags, which will show dirt more easily.

H&M, $24.99

Forever 21, $27.90

H&M, $29.99

2.  DR. SCHOLL'S FAST FLATS

I'm gonna come right out and say it.  The NYC in Sex and The City is not that of most New Yorkers!  Wearing heels (of any kind) to traipse around the city all day, or even half the day, IS. NOT. REALISTIC.  I cannot tell you how many times (in broad daylight, mind you) I have seen women hobbling around on their stilettos, band-aids on heels and knees buckling, in sheer agony- an attempt to replicate their favorite Carrie Bradshaw look.  Not a pretty picture. So unless you want to shell out a small fortune on Uber rides to/from all of your destinations, wear comfy (yet stylish!) shoes.

Going out for a night on the town?  By all means, rock those heels!  But be sure to have a pair of Dr. Scholl's Fast Flats.  I swear by them and always bring them with me whenever I'm sporting heels.  They come with their own pouch, have a sturdy rubber bottom and fold in half to fit in the tiniest of purses.  Please, I beg you.  Do not be one of those girls walking barefoot on the street with heels in hand.  Not only is it hazardous but it is DISGUSTING!  Do I really need to go into what ends up on streets after a night of partying?  'Nuff said.

Amazon, $11

3.  SCARF

Scarves are not merely accessories to the New York resident.  They are indispensable wardrobe staples which serve many important functions past fashion:

- they protect against strong winds created by streets lined with skyscrapers
- they can be worn or taken off with ease depending on whether you are walking on the sunny side of the street or the chilly shadows of tall buildings.
- they block unwanted breath on your neck on crowded trains during rush hour...ew!
- when held to the nose and mouth, they can be used to filter out any offensive odors you may encounter in transit

I recommend bringing one heavier scarf and one lighter scarf, both of which can be worn with several outfits.
Old Navy, $12.50

H&M, $12.99

4.   CARD HOLDER / CHANGE PURSE

Any visitor to the city will quickly realize that time is of the essence seemingly everywhere you go.  There is a constant sense of urgency, whether merited or not.  Therefore, easy access to your valuables is of the utmost importance.  By valuables I mean your ID, credit cards, cash and Metro Card and there is no better way to keep these within easy reach than to use a small card holder.  Wallets often contain too many compartments and unnecessary items making them bulkier than necessary and also more inconvenient.  So to avoid any side-eyes, eye rolls or snide remarks from impatient commuters or fellow customers, ditch the clunky wallets and opt for a straight-forward, no frills, easy-to-whip-out-any-card-you-need-in-an-instant, card holder.   (For the record, I do not recommend those phone case/card carrier combos.  If you lose your phone, you lose everything!)

So there you have it, the Top 4 Must-Pack Items for Your Best NYC Vacation.  Be safe, be adventurous and have the time of your life!

IGNITE Inspiration: Motionless in Pink

Ok.  So I know what you're thinking.  And if you're easily offended, this post probably isn't for you.  However, if you like aesthetics and graphic design, you can appreciate images that push the envelope.

I've worn this tank a few times but always pair it with another top or jacket to soften the look up a bit.  The real prize of this outfit is that pair of shoes!  I came across these at Necessary Clothing, a trendy chain here in NYC, earlier this summer. At $8, I could NOT pass them up.  I figured they, in their hot pink glory, would be a great girly complement to the shirt.

Finally, if you've been following me for a while, you might recognize the sunnies from this post.  They're green and they are velvet!  Probably the only velvet thing I will ever own.  I don't know what it is, but while I love how it feels, I've never seen an article of velvet clothing that I liked....yick.  If you've got any suggestions, please- I'd love to know if such an item actually exists.

Hopefully I can get another wear or two outta these shoes before it gets too cold.  Otherwise, I'll have to save 'em for spring....no biggie.

Tank: promo item, something more PC, here / Jeans: here / Jacket: similar here / Shoes: similar here and love these / Scarf: old, coveting this one / Sunnies: here (for locations)

I'm serious about that velvet thing.  I dare you.  No.  I even challenge you to find a decent looking item of velvet clothing.  Let me have it!

Who Wore It Better: Peek-a-Boo Gowns

Did you all watch the American Music Awards last night?  I caught bits and pieces of it but wasn't able to see the whole thing.  What I did pick up on was more of what I like to call the peek-a-boo gown trend.

In the past year, we've seen this style popping up (and out, LOL!) on red carpets everywhere from music award shoes to the Met Gala.

Just a few:

Ciara

Selita E Banks

Beyoncé

Jennifer Lopez
No doubt, these gowns are all meticulously crafted works of art but I'm just curious to hear what you guys have to say.  Are these body baring dresses tasteful or tacky?  Are you of the "less is more" or "if you got it, flaunt it" camp?  Which celeb pulls it off best?

Raindrops Keep Falling

It's another rainy day here in NYC but not a problem!  I've come up with another cute collection of rain gear that is sure to brighten this dreary day ahead of us.

I just have to say...these are one of my favorite kinds of outfits to put together, I don't know why.  The best part is that any of the rain boots used in these outfits can easily be worn as snow boots- just be sure to wear heavier/warmer socks!

If you're interested in any of these pieces, you can find links to the items here.  In case you missed them, some prior rainy day collections can be found here and here!

If you're by me, have a great Thursday and stay dry!  If you're not by me, enjoy your pre-winter weather while you can!!

IGNITE Inspiration: Leopard Duster

The worst is behind us.  Nothing against Mondays but....

Actually, no but.  We'll keep it at the worst is behind us.  LOL!

Moving on, we've got this weeks IGNITE Inspiration.  I bought this sweater (duster) back in the springtime but luckily they are trending big time and there are tons of cute options out there.  I'm so glad I can wear it again now that it's cooler out.  More on that in a sec.  But first, a silly pic...cuz we all know those are the best kind.

Like seriously.  It's hard for me to not do silly faces in even the most serious of pictures.  Obvs, I can manage, but the urge is always there...lurking.

Anyway....

This is an outfit of favorites.  I love the hood on this sweater and of course, the print.  I also live in these boots.  I've had them forever and hope they've got a few more years left in 'em cuz I love them so.  To get this look, I've got links for ya below!

Sweater: similar here but I love the details on this one, ok and this one too / Jeans: here / Top: here / Boots: similar here or here / Sunnies: similar here

See?  You can't tell, but I'm holding back here.  =0P

Have a wonderful day, loves!
