Monday Motivation: It's a Good Day...

I saw this when I was browsing this weekend and had to pass it along to you all.  I love how simple the sentiment is.  Nothing too deep or philosophical but equally as important.

Have a good day guys!

Weekend Web Look #2

It's Friday!!  And time for the second web look to take you into the weekend.

We've still got a few weeks before the weather gets cooler and this is a great casual summer look, with some pieces that can carry over into the fall.  The best part?  You probably already have similar staple pieces in your wardrobe already, which brings the overall cost of the outfit down significantly.

Wanna find out where you can snag the rest of the items?  Check it out here!

We're off to a much-needed vacation starting this weekend but no worries!  I'll still be posting/checking in.  Happy weekend!

The Best Store for Everything You Never Needed

I love exploring this wonderful city of ours.  Especially after a trying day at work, a leisurely walk around town is usually just what I need to regroup and re-set.  On one of my latest strolls, I discovered this store:

As the title of this post suggests, this is one of those stores where you don't really need anything in it but you want it all.  As soon as you walk in the door, you are ushered along the one, count it- one aisle in the entire store.  It snakes around like a river forcing you to look at every last over-the-top cute item displayed on either side of you.  Think IKEA but with smaller items.  They have everything from stationary, storage and home decor and fitness items to umbrellas, kitchen utensils and electronics accessories- all at dirt cheap prices.  Most of it IS very cutesy and probably better for younger shoppers but there are plenty of items that by themselves are perfectly simple and modern.

Especially after reading Marie Kondo's Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up (more about that here), I've gotten pretty good at limiting the amount of impulse buys and on this last trip I left with only two pairs of sunnies, which is quite an accomplishment given all the goodies in this store.  Yes, Marie would have been proud.

But wait, it doesn't even stop there.  Not to be outdone by the merchandise, the packaging itself is just as charming.  My sunglasses, (each $4) came wrapped in this quirky paper and bag.  Like I've said before, I'm a sucker for packaging.

If you're in the need for some fun retail therapy or looking for cute, cheap, whimsical gifts definitely check this store out.  At the moment there is only one in Manhattan (with many more in Europe and Japan) but with over 500 stores in 25 countries, we may see more stateside in the near future.

IGNITE Inspiration: Baby Doll Dress

Tuesday again!  And another look for ya.  It is still hot and sticky here in NYC so shorts and/or dresses are a must.

P.S.  I just looked at these pics with fresh eyes and realized that I am still in dire need of some color on those legs.  Counting down the days til I can soak up some sun!

This dress/shirt is another thrifted find.  Luckily/unluckily for me, there is a Buffalo Exchange near my job, which is where I bought this top.  I paired it with my wear-with-everything white shorts and nude wedges.  The statement necklace is an oldie but goodie.  Hope y'all are staying cool!

Monday Motivation: The Secret of Change...

Another week begins!

I'll admit, I am guilty of spending too much time "fighting the old"- mulling over things that 1) don't really matter in the long run, 2) don't merit my time or energy or 3) I have no control over, wanting to change them when I should just let them be and move on.  It's only recently that I've begun making a conscious effort to re-direct my attention away from saying "they should be like this" or "this is so annoying or frustrating" and instead focusing on what actions I can take to move me closer to where I want to be.  It's so liberating!

Do you guys struggle with this?  If so, what do you do/say to refocus on building the new?  I'm intrigued!

Weekend Web Looks

Happy Friday everyone!  Ever wish you had a bottomless closet with a bottomless bank account to match?  Don't we all...

Luckily, thanks to Polyvore.com, we can!  Well, virtually at least.  Here, you can put together outfits (or "sets") by using items imported to their database by other users or you can import your own finds.  It's a great way to "experiment" with looks without having to spend a dime!  And by saving them to your account, you have a complete virtual closet.

As a bonus, if any of the items you use go on sale, Polyvore will alert you so you can snag it at a good price.

I love a good bargain so my goal when creating my sets is to compile a complete look from head to toe (including shoes and accessories) for $200 or less- much less if I already own one of the items (i.e. skinny jeans).  I'll be sharing a set with you all each Friday (pay day!) to hopefully ignite some ideas for your own collections.

To start, this is one of my favorites and it's called: Rebel Red

A fanny pack, you say?  Yes.  I went there.

If you like this look, you can see the links to the items by clicking here.  Remember that the $140 price point covers everything pictured (except beauty items- in this case the nail polish).

Hope I've ignited some stylish thoughts!  Have a wonderful weekend lovelies!

#TBT You Are My Sunshine

This is a pic from 2006 from my sister's wedding.  This dress was SO comfy and I loved the color.  Unfortunately, it was one of the things that got left behind, hanging in the closet when we moved from Miami to New York.

But lo and behold, I found it again!  If you happen to be a size 0 and are looking for a great cocktail dress, Beacon's Closet has one in their online collection- here.  The best part?  It's only $35!!  I'd get it again, but I surpassed size 0 quite some time ago!

Do you guys have that one dress that made you feel like a million bucks?  Let's see!  Share in the comments!

A Matter of Comfort...

I was walking behind this woman the other morning.  I assume she was on her way to work as it was morning rush hour.

Note the conservative skirt and jacket, gym shoes, leather bag and separate tote.  This seems to be the uniform for many a working woman (at least with office jobs) in NYC.  I've seen versions of this very outfit everywhere and the sneakers with the skirts always get me.  Granted, NYC is a pedestrian city so I fully understand the need for comfortable shoes but really?  Gym shoes with office attire?  Luckily, (or unluckily) I work with children and can dress fairly casually but in previous admin jobs I preferred flats over sneakers when wearing such skirts.  They could surely fit in ONE of the bags in the pic!

What are your thoughts?  I'm curious: Is it ever ok to pair gym shoes with office wear?  And what on EARTH do people carry in that second bag that doesn't fit in their first bag??

IGNITE Inspiration: Hot Off the Streets of Harlem

I'm just gonna start by saying that I am in LOVE with all the dashikis walking around Harlem these days.  They.  Are.  Gorgeous.  Every single one of 'em.  The saturated colors, complex patterns and loose fit make them perfect warm-weather pieces.  And mine has pockets...win!  I paired mine with gold accessories and love how they mimic the patterns in the fabric.  So as not to compete with the complexity of the fabric, I chose neutral wedges (which just happen to give a little added height.  It never hurts!)

I would buy dashikis by the crate if I could, they are so beautiful.  Have a wonderful day, lovelies!

Dashiki: bought from street vendor but this one is cute too, larger sizes here / shorts: similar here / shoes: similar here or here / bangle: cute ones here and here / midi rings: here

Sneak Peek!

Happy Monday guys!

Just a little sneak peek of tomorrow's IGNITE Inspiration post:

You're gonna love it!  Have a fabulous evening everyone :)

Monday Motivation: A Pessimist sees the difficulty....

I'm sure I can speak for most people when I say that I'm a work in progress.  This, in particular, is something I'm constantly working on: focusing on opportunity instead of obstacles.

In truth, pursuing opportunities can be daunting and lots of work.  It's much easier to talk yourself out of doing something by focusing on the difficulties you'll face.  I've done this many times!  Instead, I try to visualize the final outcome first and then take it step by step, turning difficult or frustrating times into motivation to keep going.

I'm gettin' there!  Little by little.

What about you guys?  Do you consider yourself a pessimist or optimist when it comes to opportunity?  Don't be shy... share!

But I'm getting there...slowly but surely.

#TBT Can't Touch This...

Whether you call them harem pants, joggers or Hammer pants, we called them parachute pants.  My sister had a fuschia floral pair with flaps on either side that wrapped around to the front and buttoned closed.  I coveted them so, but by the time I was big enough to wear them, they had already gone out of style. 😠 The most famous example was perhaps worn by the one and only MC Hammer....

Which spurred a number of Halloween costume variations:

But like it or not, they have made a come back with a more updated look, as we can see from the ever-inspiring Gwen Stefani....I mean really, this woman can do no wrong...

What is your take on this trend?  Love it or leave it?  Let's discuss...

Well, this is interesting...

This is why I love New York.  Seen on W134th street last Saturday.  It spanned about two full blocks.  What an inspired use of scaffolding!  😂

IGNITE Inspiration: Neon and Olive

It's Tuesday and I've got another look for ya!  Featuring my new fav pairs.  We're in the middle of a heat wave here in NYC so tanks and shorts are a must.  In case you missed my previous post about these shoes, here's another close up.

These babies give me at least another inch in height- always a good thing for us shorties 😋

Hope you guys are keeping cool!

xoxo
