Plaid.  Love it or hate it, it's trending in a major way.  Here are three ways to style a plaid skirt without looking like you're wearing a school uniform. Instead we're taking cues from the 90s grunge/punk scene.

The secret here is in the shape.  Pencil skirts give length and coverage but still show off curves while a slight A-line (without pleats) borders on sexy without triggering the fetish-y vibe.  And whatever you do, NO KNEE SOCKS!

The Rocker About Town Look:  Knee length (or longer) pencil skirts like this require a bit of a heel to help elongate the leg but stilettos just don't fit with the vibe of this outfit.  Enter:  these lug-soled wedge combat style boots.  The fanny pack makes a big impact, is on-trend and frees up your hands!  Pair it with a fitted band tee and basic cardigan for a more layered look.  Details for the entire look can be found here.

The Cozy Combat Look: Pairing a shorter skirt with a T-shirt (as opposed to a button up oxford shirt) makes the look casual while the long line sweater modernizes the outfit.  A beanie and heeled combat boots gives an edge to the whole collection- which comes in under $100 at $96!

The Modern Monochromatic Look: When looking for plaids, a monochromatic color scheme can be a good bet (as most traditional plaids contain several colors).  A simple geometric design, as shown in the skirt above, provides a clean, modern look.  An oversized sweatshirt in a similar palette compliments the skirt as do the platform shoes.  Details and links for the entire look can be found here.

Weekend Web Look: Retrospect

We've made it to Friday and I, for one, am due for a little breaky break.  Here is the weekend look for this week.  Another full outfit for less than $100.  This makes me happy.

I LOVE the print on this shirt.  It reminds me of the gorgeous wax prints used in West African dresses.  These pants are too cute and totally on trend.  Check out this post for tips on how to pull this style off.

For more info on this look plus links to each item, check out my page on Polyvore- here!

Enjoy the weekend lovies!

#TBT The Miseducation...

Oh, this album.  I got it my senior year in high school and it quickly earned a permanent place in my top five albums.

Mind you this was back in the days of CDs, where the CD cover and pics were just as important as the music.  She was beautiful and her style was impeccable.  I was smitten.  So much so that I went out and bought myself a shirt just like the one below.  I'm not sure whatever happened to it but looking at this photo again makes me want to buy one again.

Some more of my favs:

Red Carpet at the Grammy's- this look inspired many a prom dress that year.

The Fugees- impeccable, all of them

 Clean and simple

Memory lane has been good to me today.  So I wouldn't blame you if you had to go dig this album out and play it on repeat, just like the olden days.  I will be too.  ;P

Work It Wednesday #5

We're going back to black this week.  Another all black collection to add to your work wardrobe.

This look is super comfy with flats and a tee.  The pants may not work for all jobs but if your employer encourages creativity or self-expression more (lucky you!) by all means, rock those zippers!  All pieces in this outfit add up to less than $100 (which is always my goal) and can be found here.

So tell me:  would this look fly at your job?

IGNITE Inspiration: B&W Plaid

Today's look features a thrifted find- an adorable babydoll style plaid dress.  I got it at my favorite second hand store here in NYC.  The boots were a steal ($8) from the clearance rack of Walmart, of all places, a few years back.

I wore this outfit this weekend for dinner (ramen, my fav) and a movie ("Room"- which was great) with the hubs.  To keep warm at night, I paired this dress with sheer black tights, OTK grey knit socks and OTK black boots.  Similar look but with more coverage.

I'll be posting about tips for wearing plaid later this week so keep an eye out for it!

Outfit details:
Dress: thrifted but similar here or here (plus) / Faux leather jacket: old, similar here or here (plus) / Boots: old, similar here / Beanie: here / Ring: old, but I love this one / Necklace: love this one

Look-a-Like: Erykah Badu

This week's look-a-like was a fun one but definitely challenging since this woman is the definition of unique.  Honestly, she can't be touched when it comes to innovative self-expression.  Of course, I'm talking about the one and only Erykah Badu.

                                                                                                           AP
I was able to recreate this look but I'll tell you now, I had a hell of a time finding these pieces, which speaks to just how unique her style is.  I focused more on the essence of each piece and found similar pieces based on that.  Here ya go!

As usual, you can find more info and links for the items shown here on my Polyvore page for this look- here.  A few more similar dresses can be found here and here.  Similar booties here and here.

This look is so fun and definitely an attention-grabber.  And under $100!  Love.

Weekend Web Look: Chirp! Chirp!

I'm so not ready for this colder weather, guys.  I'm a warm weather girl at heart.  But alas, I live in New York so a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do and look do her best to look cute even when the temps are falling way too fast!

Today's look is inspired by Ms. Fran Drescher from The Nanny.  Time and time again, she donned the classic black turtle neck and tights with funky skirts or dresses and of course, heels:

My take on this signature style:
Big hair is excluded from this collection but feel free to sport it if that's your thing.   Total look comes in under $100 and as you can see, most items are extremely versatile.  Just change up the skirt for a totally new look.  Gotta love that!

Details and links to each item can be found here.

Enjoy the weekend, everyone!

Work It Wednesday #4

This week, I'm taking a break from the all black work wear and moving on to another very unique dress code.  You know where this is from!

I love Target but the dress code for their employees?  Not so much.  This one posed more of a challenge than I expected.  Finding comfy shoes was most important and given the color palette of khaki and red, I felt like the shoes really needed to be the star so I found these cuties.  The pants upped the total cost for this outfit too and there are certainly cheaper options for skinny khakis but I liked the details on these and thought they complemented the shoes better.

Whaddya think?  For more details on these pieces plus links on where to find/purchase them, check out my Polyvore page.

Have a different dress code dilemma?  I'm here.  Let me have it!

Look-a-Like: Jhené Aiko

This chick is literally flawless.  She is a total chameleon switching up her style from bohemian one day to street chic the next and trendy the next.   Def an "igniter" in my eyes.  Perfect example of this is in her video for "Spotless Mind".  Love.

Today's post features a really trendy look right now which would look great on all shapes and sizes.

Can you believe she has a child!?  Gorgeous.  Anyway, I digress.  Here is the look for less:

Yep, you saw that right.  Everything (including shoes!) for $84.  I chose a simpler dress, without the cowl neckline just because it's more versatile but there are tons of styles like this to choose from out there at a similar price point.  Find details and links to these pieces here.

Jhené fans....are you out there?

Weekend Web Look #7: Off the Grid

Omg, what a week!  So happy the weekend is here at last.  So without further ado, here is this week's weekend web look:

You can never go wrong with black and white.  Add a splash of red and you've got one of my favorite color combinations.

I realize the price point for this look is a bit higher than previous postings but I wanted to use one of my favorite pairs of jeans at the moment.  They are the perfect fit, not too baggy but still relaxed.  I could live in these they are so comfy.  They come in at $50 but since this style is so hot right now there are tons of different versions at every price point.

For more info on these pieces plus links of where to find them, here you go!

Happy Weekend!!

#TBT 90's Hair Accessories

Hair trends.  What women won't do to/with their tresses!  Just one look at these contraptions below might induce a What are THOOOOOSE??  Rightfully so (especially that thing on the top left which I've seen around town.  For real, what are those?).

Some of us can remember sporting a few of these (hey, two out of three ain't bad).  Yes, back in the day, the size of one's scrunchie collection was in direct correlation with their social status on the playground.

Surprisingly, scrunchies are popping up again but I'm not sure I'll be jumping on this trend anytime soon.  I've had my fill.

Be honest, how many of these did/do you own?

Work It Wednesday #3

One more all black outfit especially for my retail workers!  This look is super comfy with cute flats and mid-rise skinnies.  Geometric accessories balance out the feminine feel of this outfit.

For a different look, just swap out the top.  Cutouts would look great with the accessories! Details about these pieces plus links can be found here!
Next week, I'll be featuring another look for a different dress code.  If you want some fresh ideas to spruce up your dreary work wardrobe, let me know what's required of you and I'll see what I can do.

Don't forget to share this with your style savvy friends!

Look-a-Like: Rihanna

For this week's Look-a-Like, we've got another of today's hottest trendsetters.  With her edgy style, she commands attention and truly deserves her title as style icon.  Of course, I'm referring to the one and only Rihanna.

Here, one of her more accessible everyday looks:

Love the casual ripped skinnies and loose-fitting top.  Paired with barely there black heels and foldover clutch, this outfit strikes the perfect balance of comfy and chic.  Some look a like pieces for a lot less below:

There you have it!  Details and links for these items can be found here.  (Note: for some reason, the price for the jeans is listed as $46 but they're actually $25!  But really, you probably already have these or something similar, which knocks the price point down some more!)

Got a celeb style crush?  Let me know so I can feature them in a future look-a-like post!

Weekend Web Look #6: Stone & Cranes

There's nothing like the Friday before a three day weekend, don't you think?  So let's get this weekend started right with a new look!

This combo tops out at just above $100 but if you've already got a pair of skinnies, it'll bring the total way down.  If you want more info or links for each piece, click here!

Tips for Rocking: Flares & Bell Bottoms

Hi guys!  Following yesterday's post, I've put together some things to consider when wearing flares or bell bottoms, that is, if you're into the long leggy kinda look.  And really, who isn't?
Generally speaking, I prefer darker washes with minimal fading or distressing.  Lighter washes can work too but again, with more uniform color and not too much distressing.  Higher rises elongate the legs even further depending on what type of shirt you pair them with.

Regarding tops: form fitting, loose, tucked, untucked.  Pretty much anything goes but steer away from tops that fall below the knee if you want to avoid looking too bulky.

Finally, to avoid looking too costume-y, aim for silhouettes where the actual flare looks more like a tall skinny triangle (as shown above, left) instead of a wider pyramid (like this).

What are your tips for donning this trend?  Share with us!

#TBT Bell Bottoms (Then and Now)

They're baaaack!  Ok, maybe they're not *exactly* like they were in the 60's and 70's but they are definitely making a statement.  Again.  Check out these vintage pics:

The best part of this silhouette?  LEGS FOR DAYS!  A major plus for us shorties.

For men?  Not so much.

Those waists!  So, so tiny!  This pic is everything.

Some modern takes on this style:

Work It Wednesday #2

It's time!  Another all-black look for our Work It Wednesday series.  Since this seems to be the most common wardrobe requirement in the retail world, I'll be featuring a lot of these but will cover other common dress codes as well.

Each piece here is pretty versatile and can be dressed up or down depending on what they're paired with.  Bonus: the entire look (including shoes and accessories) comes in well under $100 making it super affordable!

IGNITE Inspiration: Denim Jumpsuit

Hi guys!  This little number is so fun and comfy.  And the best part is that it is a blank slate.  I paired it with a teal purse and other bright accessories but it would look cute with a colorful neck scarf or large tote.

Perfect for a lazy day around town or brunch with a friend.  Details and links below:

Jumpsuit: here, long sleeved version here / shoes: similar here or (leopard print!) here / bracelet: old but this one is cute, this one too!

Look-a-Like: Gwen Stefani

All hail one of today's top style icons: Gwen Stefani.  Always progressive, she is constantly pushing the boundaries blending high fashion with street style....flawlessly.

                                                                                                                   via pinterest.com

Here she sports a cozy leopard print sweater, black skinny jeans and over-the-knee boots.  Like this laid back look?  You're in luck!  Some look-a-like pieces for a lot less below:

Details and links for these items can be found here.  Chances are, you've probably already got some black pants and/or leggings and black boots, which would bring the cost of this look way down.

Who are your favorite stylish celebs?

Weekend Web Look #5: Flower Child

Fridaaaay!  Yesss!  Today's look shows that even a completely casual outfit can still be packed with style.  I, for one, am so glad clogs are back in.  I've always loved them.  Maybe I was born a decade too late?  Hey, stop doing the math.

Check out my Polyvore page (for this look) here for more info on these super affordable pieces.  Hint: you've probably already got a similar pair of jeans and probably even a scarf and hoops in your closet, which leaves just the top and shoes, ~$50.  Score!

ENJOY the weekend!

Rain, Rain, Go Away

Is it possible to look cute when it's overcast, rainy and windy outside?  I don't know about you guys but here in NY it's been like this all week.  (Thanks, Hurricane Joaquin)

The standard black umbrella reigns supreme here in NYC.  On a rainy day, the streets become a sea of black umbrellas, most likely purchased last minute out of necessity from a street vendor.  So depressing.

This is why it's essential to have some fun rain gear to lighten up the heavy mood that rainy days often bring.  Here are some of my picks for umbrellas and rain boots below.  I paired them with other pieces just to complete the look but as always, super affordable.

This red umbrella is everything.  And it would look just as cute folded up when not in use.  Click here for links to all pieces shown here.

The stripes on this umbrella are sure to make you stand out in a crowd but really, these booties are not to be outdone.  While there are some really cute knee length rain boots out there, I prefer ankle length boots when it's just raining outside (as opposed to snowing).  They are less clunky and blend better with your everyday clothes.  Click here for links!

The studded detail on these booties pairs perfectly with the leopard print on the umbrella.  Plus, both pieces are so versatile.  They'd look great with lots of different combinations.  Click here for links to all of these pieces.

Hope this brought a little sunshine to you all today!  Have more tips on how to look great while keeping dry?  Share below!

#TBT My fur babies AS babies

Today I got a little nostalgic and decided to post about my little dumplings.  These pics were taken during the first week we got them back in Miami.  Brothers- inseparable from day one and partners in crime.

*sigh* Be still, my heart.

RIP my dear Mozie.
